Dallas, the capital of Texas, is the ninth-largest city in the United States. Having a population of 1.2 million, it also stands to be the third-largest city in the state of Texas. Nicknamed “Big D”, Dallas boasts itself on the motto-Live large, think big. Found in 1841, it was integrated and approved as a city on 2 February 1856. Dallas, originally, fell on the Texas Frontier when it was just another small, insignificant town. But in 1971, only after the American Civil War, it got the legal sanction of being a city.
The origin of the name “Dallas” has always been a mystery and incites controversy. Most general claim is that it was named after George Mifflin Dallas who was one of the Vice Presidents of the United States. Again another notion holds that the name was derived from a small town in Pennsylvania, which was also named “Dallas”.
A major economic centre
Dallas happens to be the main economic centre of the fourth-largest metropolitan area in the United States which is the 12-county Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington. A big proportion of all Texan live in this urbanized area. Essentially, the city’s economy rests on petroleum industry, banking, telecommunications, computer technology and transportation. Despite all the above, one of the reasons Dallas is famous is because of its historical importance of being the centre for oil and cotton industries.
Fifteenth-tallest city on earth
Famous for its incredibly tall skylines, Dallas has also been counted as the fifteenth-tallest city in the world. Some of the buildings are more than 700 feet in height. The city some of greatest and most beautiful works by both modernist and post-modernist architecture like the Bank of America Plaza, Reunion Tower, Comerica Bank Tower etc.
Culture and religion of Dallas
There is a great emphasis on Protestant Christianity which is placed amongst the culture of the people of Dallas. The highest number of churches are those of the Methodists and Baptists. There is also a large Jewish community. One of the largest synagogues is the temple Emanu-El. The Jewish community mainly live in the eastern and northern part of Dallas. Historically and culturally, they are connected with the crude American West on one hand and the agriculturally inclined South on the other.
Urbanized neighborhood and communities
Dallas has a great urban life. Areas like Downtown, which is the centre of the city, along with Oak Lawn and Uptown Dallas is full of restaurants, markets, parks and nightlife. These areas densely populated areas and thriving with urban activities. There are also some art areas nearby downtown which are updated with the latest trends. Some of the areas along Swiss Avenue have houses and homes which exhibit historical art and architecture.
Famous cuisine of Dallas
Famous for the barbecue, Dallas is also praised for Mexican and Tex-Mex cuisine which is of genuine quality. To experience the real taste of the bona fide cuisine, one can visit restaurants like La Calle Doce, Enchilada's, The Mansion on Turtle Creek etc. The residents of Dallas are in the habit of eating out. Consequently, restaurants do great business in Dallas and earn a lot of per capita, which is even greater than that of New York City.
Climate of Dallas
Climate of Dallas is sub-tropical and primarily humid although certain parts receive dry and warm winds. Winters are not very severe although sometimes it could get very cold. However, the Fall and Spring are the best seasons of in Dallas and most pleasant for any kind of outdoor activities.
